At AM.CO.ZA, we offer a professional cleaning service specifically designed for dust-sensitive laser components, including RayTools laser heads used on RAYCUT CNC fibre laser cutter and engraver machines. These parts work in extremely precise conditions, and even a small amount of contamination can have a noticeable impact on cutting quality.
But how do you know when your RayTools head actually needs cleaning?
Signs Your Laser Head Needs Attention
One of the first warning signs is irregular cutting performance. If your cuts become inconsistent or you start seeing sparks on top of the material instead of underneath, there’s a strong chance that one or more lenses inside the laser head are dirty or damaged.
When this happens, the first step is to perform basic maintenance checks before assuming the worst.
Basic Maintenance You Can Do Yourself
Start by removing the nozzle from the RayTools head and doing a visual inspection from underneath. Using your cellphone camera can make this much easier, especially in tight spaces.
If you notice dirt or damage on the visible lens, carefully remove the lens from its holder and inspect it more closely. If the dirt can be cleaned using a proper lens cleaning cloth, do so. However, if there is visible damage that cannot be cleaned away, the lens must be replaced.
Once the lens is cleaned or replaced, reinstall the lens holder and do another visual inspection from the bottom. Everything should now appear clean and clear.
It’s important to note that this entire procedure should only be done in a clean, dust-free environment. Even small particles can cause further issues if they enter the laser head during maintenance.
When Professional Cleaning Is Required
If cutting issues persist after basic maintenance, the problem is likely with the internal lenses. At this point, the laser head needs to be professionally cleaned.
AM.CO.ZA strongly recommends making use of our professional laser head cleaning service, carried out in our airtight, dust-free laboratory at the Advanced Machinery Africa technical department head office. This controlled environment ensures that internal optics are properly cleaned without introducing new contaminants.
Reinstalling the Laser Head After Cleaning
Once the head has been professionally cleaned, it can either be reinstalled by our technicians or by the customer. For those who prefer to handle the installation themselves, there are a few critical steps to follow.
First, thoroughly clean the interface using cleaning wipes supplied by AM.CO.ZA. Make sure all dirt, residue, and old adhesive are completely removed.
Next, replace the lens cap on the QBH interface. Remove the old cap and inspect it carefully. If you see any marks or spots on the lens, it must be replaced. When fitting the new lens, avoid touching it at all times.
Then, hold the laser head horizontally and align the red dot on the QBH interface with the red dot on the head. Insert the interface and twist it until it locks securely into place.
Mount the head onto the vertical base plate. To access the lower mounting screws, you’ll need to remove the small capacitance sensor unit first. Tighten the bottom screw, then reinstall the sensor unit.
Reconnecting Cables and Pipes
Reconnect the cables carefully. The longer cable connects at the bottom, while the remaining cables should be reattached according to the tags applied during removal.
Once the cables are in place, reconnect the air pipe and the water inlet and outlet pipes. These should also have been marked beforehand to ensure correct installation.
With everything reconnected, the final step is to perform laser alignment and testing. Detailed guidance on this process is available through AM.CO.ZA’s technical content and support channels.
Let the Experts Handle It
While it’s possible to handle some maintenance and installation steps yourself, AM.CO.ZA highly recommends letting our experienced technicians manage the full process. We work on these machines every day, and professional handling reduces downtime, prevents costly mistakes, and ensures your laser system performs exactly as it should.
