Mastering DTF Printer Calibration: A Step-by-Step Guide

Calibrating a DTF (Direct-to-Film) Printer is essential for achieving precise alignment between the white and colour layers of your print. In this guide, we walk you through the calibration process step-by-step, using the example of a DTF 600 Printer. By following these instructions carefully, you can ensure your prints are crisp and professional.

Understanding the Issue

The primary goal of calibration is to align the white ink layer with the colour layer perfectly. Misalignment can lead to white ink protruding beyond the colour, causing an unprofessional finish.

Example Problem:

  • Misalignment: White ink protrudes on one side of the print, while the other side lacks sufficient white coverage.
  • Goal: Ensure the white ink layer sits neatly beneath the colour layer, as seen in a properly calibrated example.

Calibration Steps

1. Prepare for Calibration

  • Start by inspecting the current print. Identify misaligned areas where the white ink extends beyond the colour.
  • Open your printer’s software and access the calibration settings.

2. Head Installation Check

  • This step is typically performed by technicians during the initial setup. It involves adjusting the vertical alignment, left-right tilt, and flatness of the print heads.
  • Ensure these settings are correct before proceeding.

3. Step Adjustment

  • Select the “Step Adjust” option in the software.
  • Print the adjustment test pattern and identify the best setting where the print appears consistent and accurate.
  • Input the chosen value, calculate, and verify the adjustment by printing another test pattern.

4. Head Space Adjustment (Horizontal Alignment)

  • Understand your printer model:
    • DTF 300: Heads are aligned horizontally.
    • DTF 600: Heads are diagonally offset, requiring additional calibration.
  • Use the horizontal adjustment feature to align the colour (head 1) and white (head 2) layers:
    1. Print an adjustment test.
    2. Identify the number where white and black lines align perfectly.
    3. Input the value and save it. Print again to verify.
  • Adjust both left and right sides separately for precise results.

5. Vertical Adjustment

  • Print the vertical adjustment test pattern.
  • Use the alignment guide to ensure the white ink aligns within the black lines of the pattern.
  • Input the appropriate value into the software, save, and verify.

6. Bidirectional Adjustment

  • This step ensures your printer produces consistent prints in both directions of head movement.
  • Print the adjustment test, find the setting where black lines align with the centre, and input the value.
  • Save and load the settings.

7. Avoid Colour Adjustments

  • Important: Do not alter the colour adjustment settings unless instructed by a technician. These are pre-set for optimal colour output and should remain at zero.

Final Verification

  • Print your original artwork and compare the results before and after calibration.
  • Ensure the white ink layer is precisely aligned with the colour, and make any fine adjustments if necessary.

Tips for Optimal Results

  • Use the “choke” feature in your software to reduce the white ink layer slightly, ensuring it stays within the boundaries of the colour layer.
  • Keep garment colour in mind:
    • Light-coloured garments: Slight misalignment may not be noticeable.
    • Dark-coloured garments: Precise white alignment is crucial for a clean finish.

By following this guide, you can achieve perfect calibration and produce high-quality prints with your DTF printer. Whether you’re using a DTF 300 or the more complex DTF 600, patience and attention to detail are key to mastering this process.
