Remove Creasing and Streak Marks on Roller Heat Press With These Simple Tips

Are you getting disappointing or inconsistent results when heat pressing? Uneven colours, streaks, or strange marks on your prints? In most cases, the cause comes down to just two common issues: moisture and tension. Fortunately, both are easy to fix.

Watch the below video for more info:

1. Moisture: The Hidden Problem in Your Material

Every roll of material absorbs moisture during manufacturing, shipping, and storage. Whether it’s sitting in a warehouse, a holding facility, or your workshop, humidity gradually seeps in.

Why does this matter?
Because when you heat press a material that contains moisture, it behaves just like ironing a damp shirt — it shrinks and releases steam.

Here’s what happens inside your press:

  • The moisture in the material heats up and turns into steam.
  • That steam rises into your transfer paper.
  • At the same time, the ink is trying to go down into the material.
  • The two forces fight each other, causing sideways bursts, streaks, and patchy transitions.

The Fix: Pre-Press Your Material

Before adding any transfer paper, simply give your material a quick pre-press. This acts like ironing it dry:

  • It releases trapped moisture.
  • It flattens the surface.
  • It prepares the fibres for a clean, even transfer.

Once it’s dry and stable, you can press again with your transfer—this alone often eliminates most print defects.

2. Tension (Pressure): Why You Get Layer Lines

If you’re seeing lines where there’s little or no ink—almost like stripes or gaps—this usually has nothing to do with moisture.
It’s a pressure issue.

Too little pressure prevents the transfer from bonding evenly, especially in layered or textured materials.

The Fix: Increase Your Heat Press Pressure

Just adjust your press by tightening or winding the pressure knob a bit further. When the pressure is correct:

  • Those layer lines disappear completely.
  • Ink transfers evenly across the entire surface.
  • Colours come out stronger and more consistent.

Two Easy Fixes for Perfect Heat Pressing

To summarise:

  • Remove moisture → Pre-press your material.
  • Fix tension → Increase your pressure setting.

These two simple steps solve the majority of bad heat-press results—and they take only seconds to do.
