How To Upgrade Your PrintUP K8 3D Letter Channel Printer

Upgrading your PrintUP K8 3D Letter Channel Printer can significantly enhance its stability and efficiency during printing. This guide will walk you through the process of upgrading your printer with a larger heat brake and heat block, ensuring a stable temperature for extended print jobs.

Watch the below video to follow the upgrade process:

Why Upgrade?

The upgraded kit includes a much larger heat brake and heat block, reducing temperature fluctuations and preventing wind interference during printing. This leads to smoother, more consistent prints.

What You’ll Need

You can purchase the upgrade as a complete kit or buy the individual components from b.z. Za. The main components include:

  • Print Nozzle: The new nozzle is longer to accommodate the larger heat block.
  • Heat Brake and Heat Block: These components keep the temperature stable while plastic flows through.
  • Thermistor: A small glass-tipped sensor that detects temperature.
  • Heating Element: Heats up the metal block and nozzle.
  • PTFE Tube: Guides the filament from the extruder to the nozzle.

Installation Steps

Step 1: Assemble the New Heat Brake and Nozzle

  1. Screw the print nozzle into the heat block. Important: Never unscrew or replace the nozzle while the machine is cold. Always heat it up first.
  2. Insert the thermistor into its designated hole and secure it with a Phillips screw.
  3. Slide the heating element into place, ensuring it sits flush with the heat block.
  4. Screw the PTFE tube into place until it stops, then secure it with the red locking piece.

Step 2: Remove the Old Assembly

  1. Unwrap the cable shielding to access the wiring.
  2. Remove the plastic cover at the back of the printer to access connections.
  3. Take a picture of the wiring layout for reference.
  4. Unscrew and remove the radiator fan, part cooling fan, and right-hand cooling fan.
  5. Detach the existing heat brake and nozzle.

Step 3: Install the Upgraded Components

  1. Attach the new heat brake and nozzle assembly to the base plate.
  2. Connect the new thermistor and heating element, ensuring they are properly plugged in.
  3. Install the new plate and screw in the extruder motor, taking care not to overtighten.
  4. Secure the BLTouch sensor and reattach the PTFE tube, trimming it to the correct length if necessary.
  5. Ensure that the filament flows smoothly by testing for resistance.

Step 4: Final Assembly

  1. Secure the heat block into the radiator assembly using grub screws.
  2. Reattach the cooling fans, ensuring cables are positioned to avoid pinching or burning.
  3. Organize and wrap the cables neatly before replacing the plastic cover.

Final Checks and Testing

  1. Double-check all screws and connections.
  2. Ensure that no parts are left over.
  3. Heat the printer to operating temperature before attempting to unscrew the nozzle in the future.
  4. Run a test print to confirm the upgrade’s success.
