From a Rough Start to Cutting Aluminium Anyway
The day actually started off great… and then everything kind of fell apart. You know the type—nothing goes to plan, things derail, and suddenly you’re stuck. But instead of scrapping the day, there was only one real option: start something new and just go for it.
Just Get Into the Material
So—aluminium.
No fancy setup, no overthinking. Just a very basic jig holding down a block, and the goal was simple: make some cuts. Not chase perfection, not dial in every parameter—just get into the material and see what happens.
If you’ve never machined aluminium before, it can feel a bit intimidating. It’s not as forgiving as wood, and there’s always that thought in the back of your mind: is this going to go wrong?
But here’s the thing—the machine didn’t hesitate.
Even with a router bit that’s actually meant for wood, it pushed through the aluminium without any issues. Cuts were running at around 2.5 to 3 mm per pass, moving fairly quickly. Could it go deeper? Probably. Faster? Also yes. But that wasn’t the point here.
It’s Not Pretty… But It Works
Now, let’s be honest—the finish wasn’t amazing.
But that comes down to the setup. With a basic fixture like this, you’re not going to get a perfectly polished surface. The way you hold your material down makes a huge difference.
Still, when you actually look at the result—the gear itself—it came out surprisingly well. Clean enough, solid shape, and definitely usable. Not bad at all for a “let’s just try this” approach.
What About Heat?
This is usually where things get tricky with aluminium. Heat builds up, tools suffer, and everything can go sideways pretty quickly.
But after all that cutting?
The bit was ice cold.
No overheating, no damage, nothing breaking. Just smooth cutting from start to finish. For a first go at aluminium, that’s honestly impressive.
Job Done
Within a few minutes, the gear was cut out completely.
Could it be refined with another pass? Definitely. A finishing pass would clean things up nicely. But that wasn’t the mission. The mission was to prove it could be done—and it was.
No experience, no special tooling, no complicated setup.
Just results.
If You Want Precision, That’s a Different Game
Now, this was the “let’s hammer it and see” version.
But if you’re looking to do proper aluminium work—clean finishes, tight tolerances, detailed parts—that’s where a more purpose-built machine comes in.
Something like the ATC EasyRoute CNC Router is designed for exactly that kind of work. Whether it’s moulds, detailed components, or anything that needs accuracy, that’s where you step things up.
Final Thought
Sometimes you don’t need the perfect setup to get started. You just need to start.
This was proof of that.
